Buildings & Structures

Brief Description

The contract was to improve the condition of the roof structure of the main concourse and train sheds at York station, including a new glazing system. This was a challenging project to deliver whilst maintaining the operational running of a high profile station 24/7.

Overview of work completed

  • Renewing approximately 800m2 of the existing glazed roof over the station concourse
  • Replacing approximately 250 individual glazing panels at isolated locations throughout the remaining area of the station’s glazed roofs
  • Carrying out repairs to the existing felt roof and gutters
  • Removing life expired timber walkways and replacement with GRP anti-slip boards

  • Refixing metal grid walkways
  • Cleaning out & relining gutters with a Liquid Waterproofing System
  • Replacing, repairing or repainting loose roof slates, timber structures, steelwork etc
  • Design, fabricate and install 16 new double access gantries above the train shed glazed areas

Successes

  • Excellent reports from ‘Considerate Contractors’ audits
  • ‘Liquid Waterproofing System’ introduced as opposed to ‘Hot Works’
  • Additional works were carried out to the existing roof access system, resulting in great safety improvements in the roof access
  • Good relationship maintained with York station – train station kept operational at all times
