Weeley Footbridge Installation

Buildings & Structures, Civil Engineering

Brief Description

CML delivered the installation of a new pedestrian footbridge over the Sunshine Coast Line to replace an existing level crossing and support a nearby mixed-use development of approximately 280 residential and commercial properties. The scheme was introduced following recommendations from Network Rail to reduce the risks associated with increased pedestrian movements across the railway.

The project included the installation of a 25-metre bridge span, placed during a planned possession using a 300-tonne crane, along with ramped access on both sides of the railway. The structure is supported by 100 concrete piles installed to depths of up to 13 metres, providing a stable and long-term solution. The completed bridge now offers a safe, accessible crossing while enabling the permanent closure of the former pedestrian level crossing.

Scope of Works

Commissioned by the developer, CML delivered the installation of a 25-metre pedestrian footbridge spanning the Sunshine Coast Line, an electrified overhead route connecting Colchester with Clacton-on-Sea.

The works included the installation of the bridge structure and associated access infrastructure, comprising:

  • A 25 m bridge span installed over the electrified railway line

  • Main span placement using a 300-tonne crane during a planned rail possession

  • 14 m of ramped access on the north side

  • 18 m of ramped access on the south side

  • Closure and removal of the existing pedestrian level crossing

The lift of the main bridge span represented a key milestone in the programme and required detailed planning, coordination, and possession of the railway to ensure the operation was completed safely and efficiently.

Engineering and Foundations

To support the structure, extensive foundation works were undertaken. The bridge is supported by 100 concrete piles, installed to depths ranging between 7 and 13 metres, ensuring the stability and long-term performance of the structure in the ground conditions present at the site.

Project Outcome

The completed footbridge provides a safe, accessible crossing over the railway while allowing the closure of the previous level crossing. The scheme significantly reduces the risk associated with pedestrian interaction with the railway and supports the successful delivery of the new residential and commercial development to the north of the line.

  • Following last weeks site handover walkout with the client, NR and the local council I would personally like to thank you for the works carried out at Weeley. The scheme has been managed and carried out in a very professional manner and it has been a pleasure to work with you on this scheme
