Mount Street Footbridge Reconstruction

Buildings & Structures, Civil Engineering

Brief Description

On Mount Street, close to Woolwich, London, CML’s Structure’s team erected a new footbridge during a weekend possession in November. In just 3.5 hours, all the new installation work was completed, which was very efficient for this type of installation. The existing life expired concrete structure was demolished to make way for new foundations and new metallic footbridge. The new bridge will enhance connectivity to the ongoing residential developments on both sides of the railway.

Project Overview

Mount Street Footbridge is an Exmouth type footbridge and is located between Charlton and Woolwich Dockyard stations on the North Kent Loop (NKL) line in London. The single span structure spans 2 no. third rail electrified tracks. The footbridge provides pedestrian access to the public, between existing and new build housing developments on Maryon Road, to the south, and Harden Court, to the north.

The life expired Exmouth footbridge was planned to be replaced with an aesthetically similar metallic structure, replacing the footprint, like for like.

The existing foundations were partly re-used for the new steelwork superstructure, which was fabricated offsite and then installed in a 27hr possession using a crane lift. However due to the efficiency of our Structures delivery team, only 3.5 hours was needed to complete the install.

Successes

The new footbridge will enhance connectivity to the ongoing residential developments on both sides of the railway. The seamless delivery of this project can be attributed to the strength of teamwork in this delivery team, coupled with a wealth of experience where our Structures team have utilised skills and knowledge from many similar previous footbridge installations.
