York Station Roof Refurbishment

Buildings & Structures, Civil Engineering

Brief Description

CML successfully completed refurbishment works on the historic roof at York Railway Station on behalf of Network Rail. The project involved restoring sections of the station’s iconic roof structure, including waterproofing the barrel arches and replacing damaged glazing panels. The works were undertaken to extend the lifespan of the roof, improve weather protection, and enhance safe access for ongoing maintenance while preserving the character of one of the UK’s most significant railway stations.

Scope of Works

The refurbishment works involved cleaning and preparing the roof valleys before applying a base coat of Deco-Thane Ultra solution to the existing felt material. While the base coat was applied, it was reinforced with a glass fibre mat lining to create a robust waterproofing layer. A final topcoat of Deco-Thane solution was then installed to complete the system.

In wind-exposed areas of the valleys, a Sikalastic metal primer was applied to ensure the waterproofing system met the required design specification and delivered long-term durability in exposed conditions.

Roof Services and Safety Improvements

As part of the project, CML also improved the organisation and protection of services across the roof. New cable trays were installed along the barrel arches, allowing loose cables to be secured and protected while creating safer and clearer access routes for maintenance teams.

In addition, a new safety line system was installed across the glazing walkways, providing a compliant and secure solution for future inspection and maintenance access.

Glazing Replacement

All glazing replacement works were carried out during night shifts under possession and isolation of the railway below to ensure safe working conditions. Damaged glazing panels were replaced, displaced panels were re-secured, and new sealant was applied where required to restore the integrity of the glazing system.

Challenges and Collaboration

A roof structure of this scale presented several logistical and technical challenges, particularly as the scope evolved throughout the project. Through close collaboration with Network Rail Capital Delivery, MHB Consultants Ltd, and key supply chain partners, the team proactively managed these changes. Value engineering principles were applied to deliver the most effective and efficient solutions while maintaining quality and performance standards.

Project Outcome

The project was delivered successfully and to a high standard by the CML delivery team. The completed works have enhanced the durability, weatherproofing, and maintainability of York Station’s historic roof, ensuring it remains protected and operational for many years to come.
