Warbreck Avenue Footbridge

Civil Engineering

Brief Description

Warbreck Avenue footbridge is located near Aintree in Liverpool on the Sandhills Junction to Ormskirk line. Existing traffic islands were removed from the footbridge to prevent motor vehicles from accessing the bridge.

Overview of work completed

Warbreck Avenue Footbridge is located on the Sandhill Junction to Ormskirk Line, 4 miles north of Liverpool Central Station. It provides important access to local residents.

Scope of work

  • Detailed civil works to the footbridge to remove the existing traffic islands and replace them with trief kerb islands
  • Installation of 340mm height kerb which was designed to be sufficient at preventing motorised vehicles gaining access
  • Installation of ‘NO ENTRY’ signage due to the central gap between the two islands was approximately 1.25m at top of kerb and 0.88m at the carriageway surface
  • Production of a Scheme drawing by Browns as a detailed design using the standard design for trief kerbs
  • Works were undertaken within a ‘high street environment’
  • Signage and pedestrian walking routes to avoid any public interaction – improving the site safety
  • Heras fencing was installed with an access gate as segregation from the worksite
  • Existing kerbs were then removed by the excavator and removed off site into storage waiting for disposal
  • New trief kerb design installed as per the AFC drawings with the surroundings of the island sealed once installed

Successes

  • Works were completed on time and to programme
  • Good relationships with subcontractors and stakeholders resulted in quick and efficient delivery of the design and physical works
  • By using a scheme drawing instead of a full detailed design, it helped speed up the design process whilst still maintaining suitable safety and integrity within the design
