Located near Southampton, Totton Depot is a key facility for maintaining Network Rail’s MPV fleet. The fleet includes specialist trains with rail mounted equipment that address rail adhesion issues, lineside vegetation as well as a variety of other seasonal maintenance requirements.

The client identified a shortfall at the Totton Depot with regard to facilities to service and maintain the Seasonal MPV operational fleet. CML were engaged in February 2022 to deliver a cost-effective facility that provided an acceptable working environment to undertake routine maintenance and servicing of MPV vehicles.

CML acted as both Principal Designer and Principal Contractor and engaged the services of RBA Consulting to progress the design. Cost savings were achieved by adopting simplified design principles.

Delivery Challenges

The single biggest challenge to the delivery of the project was the challenging timeframe required by the client team.  They were under pressure due to the seasonal nature of the facilities usage to have the depot up and running quickly. To facilitate a speedy initiation to the project, CML worked with the Network Rail team to develop the Technical Scope ensuring that it robustly captured the end users’ requirements and generated a value engineered solution.

Through working with the clients engineering team, a quick turnaround of the design was achieved (in 6 weeks) which was testimony to the effective collaboration achieved. The chosen solution adapted a modular build steel frame and cladded building which included all the lighting and utility connectivity required, with an inflated tent-style roof providing the necessary protection from the elements

Stakeholder Management

The depot is managed by the Balfour Beatty maintenance team for Network Rail and as end users of the new facility their input was key to ensure that the final product met their functionality requirements. CML liaised closely with RBA Consulting and also collaborated with Smart Space Ltd who were engaged to provide the modular building.
Collaboration with the client meant real-time interaction on issues could be dealt with as they arose. These were supplemented with regular Coordination Meetings between Network Rail, CML, the designer and our supply chain partner’s which provided an excellent forum to discuss and resolve issues.

Outcome

The project was delivered to cost and programme and to the satisfaction of the client team. CML received some very positive feedback following completion of the works.
