North Eastern Railway War Memorial in York restored for Remembrance Day

Phase One Completed

CML are proud to announce completion of Phase One of the restoration of the North Eastern Railway, Grade II York War Memorial.

Working to stringent planning permissions and heritage guidelines, CML, working with our specialist Henley Restoration and Remedials, ensured the memorial was ready in time for 2024’s Remembrance wreath laying ceremony on Monday 11 November.

Using low pressure but high temperature steam jets, the Portland Stone was delicately cleaned over a seven-day period, ensuring the monument’s preservation for future generations.

Steven Entwistle, CML Senior Project Manager, said: “This is very high-profile prestigious project, which needed to be done within very constrained timescales, and we’ve had some great interactions with the public, including descendants of those whose names are remembered on the memorial, who seem really pleased at how it’s turned out.

“Getting the memorial clean has been something people in York have wanted for a long, long time, and hopefully our work on behalf of Network Rail has done it justice.”

  • "I wanted to drop you an email to say thank you for the support and effort which you personally and the wider CML team have put in to getting York War Memorial cleaned in time for the Remembrance Services. I had a wander over this afternoon and it looks incredible, there were tourists taking photos of the Memorial, which is something I have never seen before, it is testament to how well it looks."

Cleaning completed over 7 days

Unveiled in 1924, the Portland Stone monument commemorates the 2,236 men of the North Eastern Railway who sacrificed their lives during the Great War, as well as the 51 fallen in WWII.

The North Eastern Railway War Memorial in York bears the names of 2,787 men who died in WW1 & WW2.

Our client Network Rail have invested £175,000 cleaning the monument in time for Remembrance events, with funding also coming from the Railway Heritage Trust.

It has been a privilege for CML to contribute in this restoration. We look forward to continuing our work in Phase Two, which will focus on specialist heritage mortar repairs and slab replacement. These essential steps will help ensure the monument’s long-term preservation and structural integrity.

We will remember them.
