Tottenham Hale Platform Repairs: Renewing Platforms 3 and 4 - CML Civil Engineering

CML has been delivering essential renewal works to Platforms 3 and 4 at Tottenham Hale station, replacing defective precast concrete platform structures with a modern GRP (glass reinforced plastic) solution. Following successful Week 08 and Week 09 possessions, the team completed the renewal of Platform 3 and delivered significant progress on Platform 4, with the final phase of works scheduled for the next available possession.

The site sits on the twin-track, electrified Bethnal Green to King’s Lynn line, aligned north to south between Clapton Station to the north and Northumberland Park Station to the south. The low mileage direction runs towards the north, with the upside on the west side of the station; the high mileage direction runs towards the south, with the downside on the east side. At this location, the railway runs within a slight cutting, flanked by retaining walls and built-up areas on either side – adding an additional layer of complexity to an already constrained worksite.

The Existing Structure

The original Platform 3 and 4 structures were formed from precast reinforced concrete and measured approximately 40m in length. Each platform comprised a series of precast concrete trestles at approximately 1530mm centres, with each trestle supporting three precast concrete platform decking units. The trestles were formed from a pair of columns and a cross-head cast as a single element, while the decking units were 75mm thick precast concrete slabs simply supported between the trestles.

Over time, the platforms had developed numerous structural defects linked to concrete deterioration. In certain areas, this deterioration had significantly reduced the bearing available to the structure and, in some instances, resulted in a complete loss of bearing. Given the resulting concerns over structural stability, the platforms had been temporarily supported using scaffold frames ahead of permanent works commencing.

The Solution

CML’s scope involved replacing the existing defective precast concrete platform decking and trestles with new GRP platforms, supported on precast reinforced concrete pad foundations. The ground beneath the foundations has been improved using geopolymer stabilising grout to ensure a sound, durable base for the new structure.

Delivering under Pressure

Delivered across two possessions, record summer temperatures made for stifling working conditions but teamwork and adaptability kept the project on track.

Despite these challenges, the team successfully completed the renewal of Platform 3 and made significant progress on Platform 4, setting the project up well for the final phase of works during the next available possession.
