CML are undertaking comprehensive platform refurbishment works at Rainham Station, located in London Borough of Havering east of the capital on the c2c line between London and Shoeburyness in Essex.
The Rainham Station Platform Re-Decking Phase 2 project follows extensive planning, surveys and testing including a trial area completed in 2023 and involves full refurbishment of 170m of life-expired suspended platform within a carefully planned sequence of works. It commences with the closure of Platform 1 on 24th July for 14 days including two 27-hour weekend possessions and midweek lineblocks to undertake the full scope of work, and reopening of a compliant platform for public use on 7th August.
The programme is further restricted by train movements through the station, but not stopping, during this timeframe on both days and nights as frequent passenger services and also a busy freight route, and public interfaces on Platform 2 which will remain open as usual.
Enabling works are now complete, and the first possession was delivered successfully, which consisted of demolition and removal of existing concrete platform in an “assembly line” process using four RRVs working in tandem along the platform length, followed by gangs undertaking localised excavation around the front trestle posts, steelwork preparation with 7,000psi medium pressure jetting and mechanical preparation beyond client expectations to facilitate application of a compliant, bespoke paint system to existing trestle steels.
Russell McCreath, Framework Manager commented, ‘Despite a delay, our teams demonstrated resilience and commitment, working around the clock to overachieve on all planned scope’.
Over 106 operatives were deployed on site, where all planned demolition work was completed, all high-pressure jet washing to existing steel structures, 50% painting work completed and 10% of new GRP- compatible steel framing installed.
