As part of the ‘Better Barnsley’ redevelopment plans Barnsley town centre is undergoing a major redevelopment, part of which includes creation of a wide pedestrian bridge over the railway that will connect into the new town square. Jumble Lane level crossing is currently classed as ‘high risk’ on Network Rail’s risk register. Network Rail’s aim is to secure the permanent closure of the crossing to remove the risk. The new bridge will provide improved access and enable the level crossing to be closed.
The proposed new permanent bridge, designed by Renato Benedetti of Benedetti Architects, may take another year or more to design and construct. So CML were instructed by Network Rail to design and install a temporary footbridge at the station, that could be installed and opened to pedestrians quickly, to enable closure of the level crossing in March 2019. The temporary bridge will provide a safe access for pedestrians until the new permanent bridge is completed in the future.
Our remit was to design and install an 18-metre span footbridge, with stepped access, sufficient to account for the pedestrian flows for typical daily usage and for peak periods during football match days. CML’s structures department teamed up with Mitchell Bridges Limited to deliver the project, who are one of the UK’s leading suppliers of temporary bridges.
Spatial constraints near the crossing presented challenges for the design and construction team to make the foundations and landings fit around the existing infrastructure and working in a busy town centre requires extra measures to minimise disruption to traffic, pedestrians and local communities. The experienced delivery team made smooth work of the planning and preparation works on site. And following some blustery winter weather leading up to the night of the bridge lift, the wind calmed down just in time see the new bridge landed safely in position in the early hours of Sunday 17th March.
Many thanks to Mitchell Bridges Ltd for their involvement, and well done to the whole team for the smooth and professional delivery of another footbridge, which now provides considerable safety improvements for the local community.
