It was great to see the completion of the final phase of the repairs to the Drax Power Branch line at the end of last year. The storms of February 2020 are a distant memory, but the resulting flooding event at Drax was catastrophic for the area, and very nearly took out the vital railway link into the power station upon which the UK so heavily relies.
Emergency works always throw a few challenges in to the mix. At Drax, we were under 6 metres of flood water for the first few weeks making the initial holding repairs difficult to assess and install. Then trying to navigate our way through the working restrictions associated with the pandemic in those early months, which now seem to have become so normal!
The video below shows some drone shots of the team working on the final phase of the project, having reinforced nearly 2km of railway embankments with granular fill berms over the last 9 months.
