Holbeck Depot nears completion

Playing our part in the Transpennine Route Upgrade

As part of the wider Transpennine Route Upgrade, our team is continuing work on the Holbeck Depot Upgrade, one of several smaller depot improvements taking place ahead of the main depot refurbishment (Neville Hill). The upgrades will play a vital role in supporting refuelling operations and increasing train capacity across the network.

Delivering Phase 2

Working under RTS Infrastructure, the principal contractor for Network Rail, we are currently nearing completion of Phase 2. This phase includes installation of a new 105,000-litre diesel storage tank, DNO (Distribution Network Operator) power connection, AdBlue tank slab, plant room slab, surface water drainage, and associated ducting and cabling.

One of the recent key milestones on site was the installation of the steel frame for the gull wing canopy. This marked a major visual step forward, giving everyone on site a first look at the impressive scale and form of the completed structure.

Overcoming Underground Challenges

During excavation for the AdBlue and plant room slabs, the team uncovered remnants of a former railway turntable and building foundations. These unforeseen obstructions required additional work, including the use of a breaker attachment on the excavator, to safely remove the old concrete structures.

Safe and Efficient Temporary Works

Given the size of the diesel tank excavation, a temporary works system was necessary. Working closely with MGF and GGP Consulting, the team created a sheet piling system with cross-strut supports. This design ensured the excavation remained safe and stable while the tank was installed, backfilled, and compacted.

Looking Ahead

Despite facing unpredictable weather and unforeseen ground conditions, the team’s planning and collaboration have ensured steady progress. Once complete, the Holbeck Depot Upgrade will provide facilities that strengthen the wider Transpennine Route network.
